GSM to Pounds Conversion FAQ

What is the difference between GSM and paper weight in pounds?

GSM (grams per square metre) is the international standard for paper weight. Pounds (lb) are primarily used in North America and vary depending on whether the paper is text, cover, bond, or index stock.

Because North American paper categories use different basis sheet sizes, a 100 lb text paper is not the same weight as 100 lb cover stock. GSM provides a universal standard that makes comparison easier.

Common Conversion Factors

  • Text Paper: GSM ÷ 1.48 ≈ lb Text
  • Cover Paper: GSM ÷ 2.705 ≈ lb Cover
  • Bond Paper: GSM ÷ 3.76 ≈ lb Bond
